October 31, 2025 - Friday - Today we were in Palm Springs to see the latest exhibit at the Palm Springs Art Museum called "The Art and Design of Howard Smith." Smith (1928-2021) was an artist from New Jersey whose textiles and ceramics were produced by some of Scandinavia’s biggest design firms during the heyday of post-war modernism. One of the few Black artists of his generation to successfully collaborate with industry, he brought exuberant color to curtain design and decorated his ceramics with a unique pictorial language that fused abstract forms with African symbols. Marilyn's statue has been relocated in the park in front of the museum because too many patrons objected to her "mooning" the museum.
This motorcycle jacket has an appliqué liner.
Ties, belts and suspenders.
Many of his ceramics were on display.
He also worked with metal.
We thought most of his pieces were primitive and there was a lot of salvage art. However, we both liked his work with textiles the best.
Before the museum we had brunch at Farm.
Judy had their "Crispy Bacon Benedict" with two Poached Eggs, English Muffin, Bacon, Hollandaise, and Fruit.
I had their "Brioche French Toast a la Banane" with Caramelized Banana, Rum, Brown Sugar Glaze, Mascarpone, and Hazelnuts.
The food was wonderful, as usual.
