January 22, 2026 - Thursday - Today we were in Ontario, CA to see the latest exhibit at the Ontario Museum of History and Art, called "For Race and Country: Buffalo Soldiers in California." The exhibition presents a sweeping narrative of Black soldiers and their families who made California home during the era of government sanctioned racial segregation in the US military. "For Race and Country" highlights Californians, from Northern California to the Mexican border, whose little known influence transformed the state, and the nation.
Frederick Douglass, the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.
Buffalo Soldiers in San Francisco enroute to the Philippines, 1900.
Buffalo Soldiers patrolling Yosemite.
Teddy Roosevelt (lower left corner in carriage) inspecting the troops, 1902.
Maj. Charles Young, 1916.
John Muir with Buffalo Soldiers and others in the High Sierra.
Buffalo Soldiers have been memorialized by Hollywood.
It's a wonderful exhibit with a lot of stories.
Before the museum, we had lunch at Cannataro's Italian Restaurant in Chino, CA.
Judy had their "Chicken Piccata" that is delicious.
I had my usual here, "Baked Eggplant Parmesan."
