April 22, 2026 - Wednesday - Today we were in Orange, CA to see several new exhibits at the Hilbert Museum of California Art. The first one we saw is called "Harbors and Horizons: Maritime Prints by Phil Dike." Phil Dike (1906-1990) was one of Southern California’s most accomplished and respected artists. He was one of the first artists to develop what would later be called the California Scene movement (scenes of everyday life). He also spent a notable period at Walt Disney Studios in the 1930s and ’40s, teaching color theory while working on films from Snow White to The Three Caballeros.
Phil was born in Redlands, CA.
The second exhibit we saw is called "Witness to a Vanishing West: Maynard Dixon and The Oregon Trail." Born in Fresno, California in 1875, Lafayette Maynard Dixon grew up in an environment still deeply marked by frontier life. His father, a Confederate veteran and newspaperman, instilled in him a love of history and storytelling, while the vast open spaces of California’s Central Valley and the nearby Sierra Nevada left a lasting visual impression.
Before the exhibits we stopped for brunch at Bruxie for some chicken and waffles.
Judy had their "Original Chicken & Waffle Sandwich" with boneless fried chicken, a Bruxie Waffle, butter and pure Vermont maple syrup.
I had their "Chicken & Waffle" which is boneless fried chicken, a Bruxie Waffle, butter and pure Vermont maple syrup.
We both left very satisfied.
