July 16, 2025 - Wednesday - We were back in Los Angeles today to see the latest exhibit at the Chinese American Museum called "(Be)Spoken: Poems from Our Asian American Voices." The exhibit spotlights spoken word artists by blending their poetry, performance, and storytelling. Symbolically housed in one of the oldest and last surviving structures of Los Angeles’ original Chinatown, the 7,200 square foot Chinese American Museum embodies a cultural and physical link to the past.
It's a small exhibit in a small gallery, and there was a noise problem. Various Asian American poets recorded their poems that were played on audio. However, there was also a small group of noisy teenagers in the gallery reading the poems out loud. The din of all the noise did not make for a relaxed experience.
This woman's poems were about her mother, whose command of the English language isn't very good.
Here's one of the her labels pasted to a bottle.
We weren't at the exhibit very long, but I did manage to inadvertently catch Judy's reflection in a mirror.
Before the exhibit we had brunch at the Maddalena Restaurant at the San Antonio Winery. San Antonio Winery remains the oldest and largest producing winery in Los Angeles with over 100 years of winemaking.
The food here is wonderful. I had imported spaghetti, marinara sauce, Italian pork sausage and parmesan.
Judy had some delicious lobster raviolis with a roasted bell pepper sauce.
