September 4, 2026 - Friday - Today we were back in Pomona, CA to visit AMOCA, the American Museum of Ceramic Art. One of their current exhibits is called "Tōgei: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics." The exhibit explores Japan’s ceramic tradition since the enduring Japanese patronage for pottery is due to its intimate connection with widely practiced arts, such as the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, incense ceremony, as well as with cuisine and drink. Elite sushi restaurants in Japan commission plates and bowls by contemporary ceramists to complement the season and enhance the colors and textures of their food.
The exhibit has many abstract pieces that I didn't photograph, although a few are included on this page. We looked at most of the abstract pieces thinking "What is that supposed to be?" and we couldn't figure them out, therefore no photograph.
This flower vase is stunning, and it's called "Mountain Landscape."
These are a matching tea pot and a tea container.
This is a bowl for cold water used in making the tea.
This piece was the hit of the day. It's a flower vase in the shape of a bucket.
Before the museum we had lunch at Hen & Heifer Pomona.
We both had the same thing, their "The Standard Burger" with a fresh-ground premium burger patty, house-made burger sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, caramelized onions and American cheese. The meat is delicious!
And the fries were pretty good too.
